President - Board of Trustees

Purpose

Serve as leader of the Creative Living Board of Trustees, and Executive Committee.   Ensure the effective action of the board by governing and supporting the organization, and overseeing board affairs.  Act as the representative of the board as a whole, rather than as an individual supervisor to staff. Actively participate in various committee efforts, office staff initiatives, and the balanced involvement of both with the resident community at large. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Partner with the executive director to develop meeting agendas.  Preside at board and executive committee meetings fostering open communication and inquiry and ensuring due process. 
    2. Lead the establishment of the budget and strategic plan.
    3. Recommend committee establishment to the board. Seek volunteers for committees and coordinate individual board member assignments. Ensure each committee has a chairperson.  Identify committee recommendations that should be presented to the full board. Serve as ex-officio member of all committees. Convene the executive committee as necessary.
    4. Convene board discussions on evaluating the executive director and negotiating compensation and benefits package; convey information to the executive director. As need arises, establish a search and selection committee (usually acts as chair) for hiring an executive director. 
    5. Ensure that board matters are handled properly, including preparation of pre-meeting materials, committee functioning, and recruitment/orientation of new board members. 
    6. Speak to the media and the community as an alternate spokesperson on behalf of the organization; represent Creative Living professionally in the community. 
    7. Proactively identify and recruit President successor candidates focusing on specific areas of expertise and/or representing the same employer as the incumbent.  Actively participate in other board officer succession planning as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Minimum 10 years general business administration, management and/or leadership functions experience Prior nonprofit experience and/or board membership is strongly desired.  Superior communication and decision making skills and a proven ability to professionally handle sensitive, confidential matters are required.

Vice President - Development

Purpose

Serve as development lead for the Board of Trustees, Executive Director and office staff. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Actively participate in Board meetings and attend regularly
    2. Participate in the establishment of the budget and strategic plan
    3. Faciliate new development opportunities in community; including working with Executive Director and Development Committee on ways to grow corporate sponsors and funds backing Creative Living.
    4. Develop and maintain the strategic direction with committee leads for each fund-raising event, along with the Executive Director.
    5. Help identify and recruit Vice President – Development successor candidates focusing on specific areas of expertise and/or representing the same employer as the incumbent

Prior nonprofit experience and/or board membership is desired.  Proven communication, presentation and decision making skills and proven ability to professionally handle sensitive, confidential matters are required. Relationships with key companies in Columbus and beyond is desired.

Vice President - Facilities

Purpose

To keep both Creative Living facilities in the best possible order for the residents, Resident Assistants, and office staff.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Actively participate in Board meetings and attend regularly
    2. Participate in the establishment of the budget and strategic plan
    3. Assist with identifying and prioritizing maintenance projects needed to maintain both facilities in the best possible condition
    4. Work with the executive director and treasurer to determine the funding available for potential maintenance and renovation projects
    5. Call and preside over committee meetings; invite the Executive Director and Board President as necessary
    6. Review and record any full board recommendations that may impact committee
    7. Report the committee’s activities and recommendations to the Executive Committee and the full Board
    8. Work with the Executive Director and Board President to determine who should serve on the committee
    9. Evaluate the work of the committee with the Board President and Executive Director
    10. Help identify and recruit Vice President – Facilities successor candidates focusing on specific areas of expertise and/or representing the same employer as the incumbent

Vice President - Human Resources

Purpose

Serve as a human resources subject matter expert for the Board of Trustees, Executive Director and office staff on all HR issues 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Facilitate annual office staff compensation reviews
    2. Help coordinate annual health care renewal
    3. Ensure all employee policies and rules are compliant with applicable law and are followed appropriately
    4. Assist residents with HR-related questions
    5. Help identify and recruit Vice President – Human Resources successor candidates focusing on specific areas of expertise and/or representing the same employer as the incumbent

Vice President - Public Relations

Purpose

Assist the Executive Director in maintaining a positive image of the organization in the community. Support Board of Trustees, Executive Director and office staff on all Public Relations issues 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Call, facilitate and set the agenda for committee meetings; inform the executive director and board president of committee meetings
    2. Record decisions and recommendations made by the committee or board
    3. Build a well rounded committee and sub-committees with involvement from the executive director and board president
    4. Delegate responsibilities to other committee members and encourage full participation; evaluate the effectiveness of the committee as needed
    5. Attend all meetings
    6. Assist in the creation of a year-round public communications strategy, including but not limited to fundraising event promotion, social media strategy, website development, photography, and
    7. Work closely with the executive director, board president, and office employees to plan all publicity and promotion in support of Creative Living announcements and fundraisers
    8. Communicate Creative Living’s services and/or programs to the community
    9. Facilitate and maintain a consistent branding approach in all communications; encourage a strong and recognizable brand for the organization
    10. Help identify and recruit Vice President – Public Relations successor candidates focusing on specific areas of expertise and/or representing the same employer as the incumbent

Other Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Work in conjunction with Development committee
    2. Communicate with event chairs to assist in specific event PR needs

Vice President - Resident Relations

Purpose

Provide residents and resident managers access to resources enabling them to live as independently as possible in a safe, community friendly environment.

    3. Call and preside over committee meetings; invite the Executive Director and Board President as necessary 
    4. Review and record any full board recommendations that may impact committee 
    5. Report the committee’s activities and recommendations to the Executive Committee and the full Board 
    6. Work with the Executive Director and Board President to determine who should serve on the committee 
    7. Evaluate the work of the committee with the Board President and Executive Director

Vice President - Trustee Development

Purpose: To identify and nominate qualified candidates for the board.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Call and preside over meetings of the committee.
  • Set the agenda for committee meetings.
  • Record decisions and recommendations made by the committee or the full board.
  • Serve on the executive committee.
  • Report the committee’s activities and recommendations to the executive committee and the full board.
  • Inform the executive director and board president of committee meetings.
  • Work with the executive director and board president to decide who should serve on the committee.
  • Delegate responsibilities to other committee members and encourage their full participation.
  • Evaluate the work of the committee with the board president and executive director.
  • Attend all meetings.
  • Anticipate vacancies on the board.
  • Evaluate current board members’ participation; discuss concerns with members in need of impvement; inform board president of results.
  • Communicate to all board members the criterion for prospects, including expectations and targeted areas of expertise.
  • Regularly ask the full board to submit the names of good candidate prospects.
  • Ask board member candidates to complete applications for board membership.
  • Screen applications for board membership and submit the names of finalists to the executive committee and to the full board.
  • Recommend individuals and seek board approval to fill board vacancies that occur during the year.
Treasurer

Purpose 

Help ensure the fiscal integrity of Creative Living by providing oversight of its financial activities and ensuring the accuracy of all financial records.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Actively participate in board meetings and attend regularly
  2. Serve on the executive committee
  3. Help develop an annual budget and seek approval of the budget from the full board; actively support the budget to funding sources, provide needed figures and lobby for funding approval
  4. Help establish the strategic plan; write and regularly update a long-range financial plan
  5. Establish an investment policy to maximize income; review and approve key financial and operating policies, goals and objectives
  6. Call and preside over meetings of the finance committee; record decisions and recommendations made by the committee to the full board
  7. Ensure that the board’s financial policies are followed and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) are practiced
  8. Report the results of independent third-party annual audit to the full board
  9. Review financial statements/analyses and give regular reports to the board on the financial health of the organization
  10. Review all proposals requiring a long-term commitment of resources; make recommendations to the board
  11. Present to the board recommendations on matters related to financial institutions, including loans, investments, bank accounts and specific funds established by the organization
  12. Help identify and recruit Treasurer successor candidates focusing on specific areas of expertise and/or representing the same employer as the incumbent

Secretary

Purpose: To maintain all board records and ensure their accuracy and safety.

Duties and Responsibility:

  • Attend all board meetings.
  • Review board meeting minutes for accuracy.
  • Keep a register of board members’ addresses and phone numbers.
  • When necessary, obtain information from records and minutes to help board members in the decision making process.
