Life Changing Accident
There are reasons behind why I was driving so reckless. But basically I was driving 120 mph and I lost control of my car when I got a flat tire. My car flipped 5 times and landed upside down in a field in rural Rushville, Indiana. I actually had no pulse at the scene of the crash and they brought me back to life. I had two collapsed lungs, a severely dislocated elbow, and I fractured my C6 and C7 vertebrae which caused a traumatic spinal cord injury. This left me paralyzed from the chest down. I gained function back in my right hand but not in my left. I would say that I’m lucky to be alive.
When I had my accident on January 22, 2011 I was 5 classes away from graduating at the Ohio State University. I came back to Columbus in January and finished my Civil Engineering degree in June. I was a national champion water skier before my accident and I was extremely active. I have been involved with a therapy at Ohio State called locomotor training funded by the Christopher Reeve foundation. I attend therapy 5 days a week, 2 hours a day. I’m suspended in a harness above a treadmill and 2 people move my legs in a walking motion which is supposed to retrain your spinal cord how to walk. When I am not doing therapy I work on writing my book and writing my blog. I also spend a lot of time with friends and family and I enjoy everything that Columbus has to offer.
What CL Means to Me
Creative living gave me my independence back. I was living at home for the 1st year after my accident and I could not imagine a way to get back down to Columbus and finish my degree. Creative Living helped to enable that dream. Creative living provides a community of people that know exactly what you’re going through. The support that you receive is incredible. There is so much more opportunity for me down here in Columbus and if it was not for Creative Living I think that I would still be back home and the opportunities would not be as great.
Message to Our Supporters
This is a very unique organization that changes the lives of so many people. With your support you’ve changed my life forever. By supporting Creative Living you’re helping us become independent so that we can live more fulfilling lives. Just because you’re in a wheelchair does not mean you cannot change the world and you’ll be helping us to do just that.
My Dreams & Aspirations
I’ve always dreamed big. I’m currently in the process of writing a book which I hope to have published in the near future. I also have a blog at www.AdamHelbling.com. I love reaching out to people and sharing my story. I have been involved with public speaking and I hope between that and my book I can make a career out of it. I also want to get involved with grant writing and try to build more places like Creative Living. I think it would be great to build a facility like this for vacation rentals because it is difficult for people with disabilities to travel.
